Discussion Topic: Chapter 2

Concept and Brief Description

In order to create High-Performance Work Systems, companies must find an excellent fit between the organizations social systems (people) and technical systems (equipment and processes).

Emotional Hook

When our parents were entering the workforce, they committed to an employer and, as long as the employer provided them security and a paycheck, most dedicated their lives to the employer until retirement. Current generations, however, are quick to move on and often jump from one company to another seeking better opportunity which is costly to the employer. As a result, HR Depts must create ways to motivate employees.

Key Points

To keep employees working at their optimum skills level and maintain high motivation, organizations are choosing to rely on knowledge workers, employee empowerment (more responsibility and authority to make decisions), teamwork, and become more decentralized.

Facilitative Question

How can an organization tap into their employee’s creativity and interpersonal skills and motivate an employee to be more productive while adding value to their position?
